·    The choice of fuel.  It would be safe to use a fuel that is available in your area.  Fuels used in generators can vary from natural gas, to gasoline or diesel.  However, gasoline can’t be stored for a long time and diesel is not readily available so it would best to use propane.  There are times that home generators are available in dual- or tri-fuel format wherein switching fuels is totally fine.
·    Another would be the generator motor to consider.  Like any other motor, generator motor is subject to heat and would need to cool off.  Air-cooled generators are loud and not as effective; however, liquid cooled systems are priced higher and require higher maintenance.  Also, choose a generator that has a motor of a known company so that it will not be hard to look for parts and service is also available.
·    Next would be the safety, do not put portable generators inside the house because it is a health risk for the people living in the household.  Generators emit certain gasses that are harmful to the body.  Always ask someone who is knowledgeable enough to do the wiring and installation, even to the connection of the fuel since generators are sensitive to both volume and fuel pressure.

Dealers are also an important part in the selection process.  Choose a dealer that is knowledgeable and competent in home generator sales and has been there for a while so that they will be able to give you the right information on complicated questions.  It is also important that these dealers will be in your area so that they can aide you in the maintenance and service in your backup power supply.
